Pendletonians participated in a satellite march for the national March for Science on Earth Day, 2017.
Participants gathered at Roy Raley Park on SW Court Ave. at 11 a.m. and set off towards Riverfront Plaza, walking east on the SW Court Ave. sidewalk and chanting in support of science. At Riverfront Plaza, the group marched east on the levy and returned to Roy Raley Park. The marchers were silent on the return trip. Pendletonian Times estimates that 125 people marched for science.
In a local twist on the national movement, the organizers held a science fair at the park after the march. Food vendors included Mobile Food Adventures and Mario’s Basque BBQ. Great Pacific Coffee & Wine Co. operated a beer garden and Oregon Grain Growers Distillery sold cocktails. Booths and demonstrations at the event included Pendleton Parks & Recreation’s annual tree giveaway, a face painting booth run by Blue Mountain Community College’s Associated Student Government, KBLU 90.5, and the National FFA Organization.
