PENDLETON, Ore. – On July 16, 2017 a fire destroyed a home in Pilot Rock and killed 72 year-old Larry Castro and Angela Marie Fix was arrested later in the morning for first degree arson. On July 17, Fix was arraigned in courtroom number three at the Umatilla County Courthouse and Intermountain Public Defender was appointed as counsel.
Fix appeared via CCTV and became disruptive after she took offense to the condition that she neither use nor posses fire starting materials. Judge Jon Lieuallen asked the attending deputy at the Umatilla County Jail to turn off the inmate microphone and set bail at $50,000, further ordering that she not leave the State of Oregon if she were released. First degree arson is a Class A felony with a maximum sentence of 20 years imprisonment and a $375,000 fine.
A grand jury indicted Fix for Manslaughter in the Second Degree on July 21, and she was arraigned on this charge on July 24 in courtroom number one. Manslaughter in the Second Degree is a Class B felony with a maximum sentence of 10 years imprisonment and a $250,000 fine. Judge Christopher Brauer set bail at $500,000 and a trial date has been scheduled for September 11, 2017.
